Symptoms and Prevention of CRD in Poultry
CRD (Chronic Respiratory Disease) is an infectious respiratory disease affecting chicken production quality. CRD is caused by the bacterium Mycoplasma gallisepticum (Mg), this bacteria can live for 1 – 3 days in feces with a lifespan depending on the environmental conditions. At 37C the bacteria can live for one day outside the chicken’s body, and at 20C can live for 3 days. This bacteria infects the respiratory tract in poultry, causing CRD disease.
CRD can be transmitted through direct contact, contaminated food, poultry, and cages. The disease can affect chickens of all ages, including breeders, laying hens, and broilers.
Symptoms of CRD in chickens include mucous nasal cavity, facial swelling, coughing, and snoring while breathing, decreased appetite, swelling and inflammation of the air sac, slow growth, egg production drops by up to 20%, and feed efficiency decreases by more than 20%.
CRD can cause economic loss, as it can have an impact on decreased production, egg quality, and carcass quality, high embryo mortality rates also lead to low egg hatchability, decreased feed efficiency, increased mortality, and production costs for treatment.
CRD is chronic, meaning it lasts continuously for a long period of time and is difficult to cure. To prevent and treat CRD, farmers can take the following measures:
- Provide multivitamins such as Astressvit to cope with stress and increase the stamina of the chicken's body.
- Implement good biosecurity in the cage area, by maintaining the cleanliness of the cage, equipment, and the environment.
- Using high-grade disinfectants made of glutaraldehyde such as Biodan to eradicate M. gallisepticum and E. coli.
- Installing a fan or blower to help air circulation.
- Maintain the cage's density so that there is no accumulation of ammonia gas too high.
